Real Estate vs Editorial

When it comes to any job, you have to first consider what the job is and its’ intended purpose. You then have to consider your audience. With architectural photography, can you can’t just shoot every job the same. These things must be considered. Shooting one type of job like another can have negative consequences. Even if something is trendy or eye-catching, you need to keep the main things in perspective and not get sucked into the temptation to shoot the wrong way for a job. Not to say you can’t do some of both in one, but you must keep the intended goals in perspective. That is why we do not do very many detail photos within real estate specifically. Over and over again we hear complaints from homeowners about pictures that look pretty, but don’t show the house. They constantly tell us that they want to see the home, not some detail that can be changed, such as a sink faucets. So I wanted to clarify the differences and let you decide which is right for you as an agent or homeowner.

Real Estate

The main purpose of real estate photos is to capture the overall of the property itself, giving the viewer as good of an idea as possible of the various spaces of a property, and how they intersect with each other. The audience is the potential buyer that wants to see what the property looks like. There are some details that are good to showcase, but those are rare. Most of what is needed to be seen can be seen with a general overall image of a space, or even a slightly closer-in image. But a super close detail of a sink, or handle, or such is not needed and can frustrate many people because they are not looking for cosmetic things that they can replace, but want to see what the property itself looks like. They can use their own imaginations from there.

Editorial

Here is where you will want more of the pretty pictures that are more eye-catching; those detail photos that are so cool looking. Close-ups of portions of a space, or details that show-off construction detail, or that of the design of the house. Pretty pictures of items sitting in a space. Things like that! These are not the things that will help sell a house, but can sell an experience for a rental, or provide marketing materials for companies showcasing their work. Whether it be a construction company, a interior design, someone flipping a house, etc. Here you will still want some over-all’s like you would in real estate, but not as many.

As it relates to commercial jobs, which on not real estate specifically, These kinds of jobs often require a heavy mix of both styles of shooting. So again, you need to take into consideration the job, the audience, and what the intended goals are.
